Today July 27th being the start of the one year countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games in Stratford, East London as part of the countdown launch, a large number of West End theatres have announced new extensions to the period for which the most popular shows can be booked. Next year’s biggest event for theatre breaks in London is likely to be the opening of The Wizard of Oz by all accounts. The full cast list has yet to  be revealed but we do know that Michael Crawford, the former Phantom from The Phantom of The Opera is to play the Wizard and of course Danielle Hope is Dorothy. With such a cast, and building on the interest from the TV show Over The Rainbow, Andrew Lloyd Webber looks set for a big hit but of course it will all depend eventually on word of mouth, and how well the new musical theatre show is produced at the London Palladium. Being a long standing favourite family show will hel as well for some kinds of London breaks with the children I suppose, but that’s not to say the Wizard  of Oz won’t appeal to grown ups and couples after a good weekend break in London. Tickets sales are reported to be brisk even at this early stage, and fans of the runner up in the competition, Sophie Evans have been booking up theatre breaks with hotel and travel deals to see Sophie when she plays the part of Dorothy herself at the London Palladium on Tuesdays and some of Danielle Hope’s holidays.

Love Never Dies By the time many people read this the free tickets competition will be over, so I’ll write about why I think you might like to consider Love Never Dies theatre breaks anyway. I guess you may have already seen The Phantom of The Opera ? The most successful piece of live entertainment ever, it’s been on long enough. Or maybe your parents enjoyed it thirty years ago when Michael Crawford played the Phantom. Well Love Never Dies is a continuation of the story, but with completely new twists. The scene is set ten years after the incident at the Paris Opera House, and the Phantom is now presiding over a huge entertainment complex at Coney Island, New York. He manages to manipulate Christine and Raoul into sailing across the Atlantic and into his lair. But there’s much more than that…

Some of the music in Love Never Dies comes from the operetta genre, some from light entertainment and some even from a rock background. This is the fusion which Andrew Lloyd Webber does so well. The staging, sets and costumes are magnificent, so you really do see a big musical theatre event up there on the big stage. This is certainly not one of your small cast and minimalist aesthetics plays, like many even in the West End, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess are both star quality singers in the lead roles and it’s nice to hear the full orchestra getting a proper work out. Did I mention the free tickets? As it falls on a Friday night this year lots of shows have performances on New Year’s Eve and London is, of course, a fantastic place to be on such an important night. I’ll go through each of the shows, suggest some central hotels, cover some of the great things on in the city centre after the shows close, and suggest some things to do on New Year’s Day. This is fine but it does mean you miss out on the fun and excitement of Big Ben’s chimes and the magnificent fireworks displays. To me this is part of why you’ve come to the capital. To miss out on it stuck out of the city, no matter how nice your hotel, would be a shame. I’ll explain more about the fireworks and the New Year’s Day Parade later in the post. Ideally you want your hotel to be in the central area, say not more than 1 mile from the theatre. Sounds expensive? Actually surprisingly not too bad. I looked at good tickets for Phantom of the Opera and 2 nights and found I could get a 3* very central hotel for £250ish per person.  This isn’t much different to a normal weekend rate. New Year Theatre Breaks by Rail Advice – Come By Rail if You Possible Can This is one weekend you do not want to have a car in central London. Really, it’s better to come by rail usually anyway but New Year sees vast numbers of road closures and a car is really going to cramp your style. The theatre breaks agencies usually allow you to include your train tickets and can save you up to 40% on the normal price. After the Show – the fireworks. You won’t get out of the theatre in time to grab a prime position for the displays. They will all be filled by about 10pm. However, no need to despair. Wrap up warm and get yourself to a spot where you can see the London Eye and you will be able to see a really spectacular show. The chimes of Big Ben are broadcast down the length of the river and then the display starts. If you prefer you can head for Trafalgar  Square. There are no events planned but there is a huge screen which will relay the countdown and chimes and then show the fireworks. Just try to keep out of the fountain! No, really, it’s a really bad idea. Once it’s over you can smugly watch everyone head for the overcrowded tube as you stroll back to your cosy central hotel. By the way alcohol is not prohibited in the centre of London on New Year’s Eve so if you did happen to have a hip flask with you it might be a very nice way to bring in the New Year! New Year’s Day Parade After a full English breakfast, ( see hip flask above!) and a gentle potter round the hotel it’s time to head off for the parade. This has become a really fun event. It starts at 12 and goes on till 3. This year is the 25th anniversary of the parade and it looks set to be an extra special one. There are numerous marching bands, floats and performances. They are not too expensive with even the V.I.P. one at Whitehall only costing £20 each. These give you the best view of the parade. Happy New Year for 2010 from the Theatre Breaks in London blog team. It’s been a great year in London’s West End with some surprise hits and some unfortunate flops as well, and we look forward to 2010 especially with the opening of the Phantom of The Opera continuation Love Never Dies and the new Wizard of Oz. January is a busy tine for the travel and entertainments industries so we hope you all manage to find the best theatre breaks in London bargains out of all the new deals and offers floating about at this time of year.

London theatre packages come in a variety of shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common. They make delightful gifts! Choosing presents for loved ones is never easy and when it’s for a much loved Mum and Dad it can be really hard. What can you get the couple who have everything? A giant food hamper perhaps? Well, maybe, but it’s just food. Might be, dare I say it, a little dull? After all your Mum is just going to add it to that already overstocked pantry and freezer and while your Dad might enjoy the bottle of malt whisky it doesn’t really show much thought does it? So how do you choose what they’d like to see? Sometimes it is obvious and easy to just choose their favourite show. If your parents are not quite so predictable I’d start with their music collection if I were you. Here’s some tips: Lots of classical stuff, some light opera, SuBo’s new CD = Les Miserables or just possibly Phantom of the Opera. If you are feeling adventurous book for Love Never Dies so they can brag to their friends about being the first to see it! Not much after 1965, except maybe some Shawadiwadi. Your Dad goes a bit funny when anyone mentions Olivia Newton John – they are going to love either Jersey Boys or Grease! Your Dad’s rock collection is rivaled only by your Mum’s passion for Freddie Mercury – has to be We Will Rock You Your Mum knows all the words to Dancing Queen and still has all her signed photos of Bjorn. Your Dad liked the film – Mamma Mia of course

I expect you get the idea by now. You could always surprise them and choose tickets to Chicago (still the sexiest show in town) or even Dirty Dancing. They’d have a great time at either whatever their musical taste. That’s the thing really. All the shows that are on in London are worth seeing. The New Phantom of the Opera – David Shannon David Shannon is the actor who replaces Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom Of The Opera on November 9th 2009. Ramin Karimloo will do his last show as the Phantom on the 7th, until he plays another phantom role next year in Love Never Dies. David Shannon from Les Miserables David Shannon recently completed a run in Les Misérables as Jean Valjean.

( audio only ) From the evening show of the 10th October, which was the last day of David Shannon (Valjean), Earl Carpenter (Javert) and Katie Hall (Cosette) in the 09/10 West End cast, so some passages might be a bit emotional. Spine tingling stuff and a great choice for the Phantom I think! His other stage credits include Miss Saigon, Whistle Down The Wind, Cats, Martin Guerre and The Beautiful Game. Other Cast Changes in the Phantom of the Opera Other new faces to The Phantom Of The Opera cast include Rebecca Lock, Nicky Adams and Tabitha Webb. Rebecca Lock, most recently of Avenue Q who takes over as the awful Carlotta. Nicky Adams, joins as Madame Giry and Tabitha Webb will alternate in the role of Christine with Gina Beck.

I have a few questions about the new musical Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of The Opera, I wonder of any of you can help me? 1) If Love Never Dies is set 10 years after the original, and the Phantom Of The Opera took place in 1881, then why does it seem to be about 1907? These dates and numbers donl’t add up for me. 2) There was a sequel to the original book by the author who wrote Phantom of The Opera, and that sequel was called “Love Never Dies” but then there was the Frederick Forsyth novel called “The Phantom of Manhattan” Which one is the new musical based on? 3) Andrew Lloyd Webber says in one video that it was Ben Elton who went away and came up with a plot that recycled the orginal characters, but then at the press release he seems to suggest there was a “we” who came up with that idea. Is this new story Ben Elton’s creation or Glenn Slater and ALW’s ? 4) What happened to the simultaneous opening in Singapore? Seems to have been replaced by a vague intention to open Love Never Dies in Australia in 2010 sometime. Australia is not Singapore. Thanks for any leads or clues.

My tip for theatre breaks in London in 2010 is going to be for, “Love Never Dies”, the Phantom of the Opera sequel. We don’t know all that much about it yet, but that doesn’t matter, even this early. We know the pedigree behind it, with Andrew Lloyd Webber in charge and a whole string of hit musicals behind him, but that’s not the clincher. Theatre breaks in london Anybody who has been up to London on a special trip just to see The Phantom of the Opera will be wanting to see what happens next, and that’s where Love Never Dies theatre breaks in London will pick up a certain number of devotees but there’s more. There are two books which Phantom fans may have come across. So with a host of talented established musical theatre stars lined up for a possible three instances of Love Never Dies worldwide, with the experience of the management, talent of the writers and the following of Phantom to build on, I can’t see Love Never Dies failing to make a permanent marl on the London theatre breaks scene.

Ben Elton, the writer of Blackadder Rides Again has been hired to write the dialogue and playscript known as “the book” in the theatre world, so this will give Love Never Dies London breaks a chance of being just as possibel as We Will Rock You London breaks and Phantom of the Opera London breaks combined.

Sierra Boggess will play the leading role for Love Never Dies, the long awaited Phantom sequel. The show is expected to open in London at the Adelphi Theatre next spring (2010). Sierra Boggess Sierra  played the title role of The Little Mermaid on Broadway. She is no stranger to the role of Christine and played her for 2 years in The Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sierra Sings Think of Me I found a good video of Sierra which gives a sample of her vocal range. She has a very fine voice and it should combine beautifully with her co-star Ramin Karimloo.
